Hosted by The Society of Freethinkers, Dr. Michael Shermer joins us at UCM to discuss his new book, The Believing Brain.  Dr. Shermer is the founder of The Skeptics Society, Editor in Chief of Skeptic magazine, producer and co-host of the Fox Family television series “Exploring the Unknown”, and author of Why People Believe Weird Things.  Join us for an evening of scientific inquiry and a glimpse into the mind.

We hope you are settling in nicely for the new semester. Our first general meeting is at 8pm this Thursday, Sept 8 at COB 114. Find out how you guys can become involved as members of the Society of Freethinkers. Or just come chill with some awesome people and enjoy some free food. Meet people like yourselves and come see what SoF is all about!

The buttons are $3.5 each and the one with our logo on is only available to our members. You may be able to obtain them during our meeting or find us when we table. (We know it is fairly pricey for a button but it is as cheap as it goes when we do not have the resource to order in large quantities)

Hello everyone!

Here are the questions to ponder before the meeting this Friday! Come prepared!! This will also be our last meeting before the break, so may everyone do well on the finals and have a wonderful break!

1. What is Pascal’s Wager?

2. Why is it important for freethinker’s to have a rebuttal to this wager?

3. What are some of its criticisms? Pros, cons, etc.

4. Is it a valid defense for theists? What have we talked about in

previous discussions to come to terms with this wager (i.e. existentialism,

rationalism, naturalism, etc)

5. If we have time we can talk about the Watchmaker, which is a somewhat

similar discourse.

6. Also, we can talk about current events (the billboard controversy comes

to mind) and the origin of Christmas
